Brothers Johnson – Light Up The Night

A Brothers Johnson highlight and the last that Quincy Jones produced, 1980’s Light Up The Night was produced at the same time as Michael Jackson’s Off the Wall, and features a lot of the same writers and musicians as that record. Michael Jackson and Rod Temperton even wrote some of the songs, while Jackson sings backup vocals on This Had To Be. Light Up The Night defines the funk/soul/disco sound that these musicians and songwriters developed, and is a sleekly produced and impressive example of the Quincy Jones/Brothers Johnson mojo that brought them a lot of success in the 1970’s. The highlight is Stomp!, which reached No. 7 on the pop charts and No. 1 on the dance charts, and the album also delivers a shot of Louis Johnson emitting light from his groin and a PSA from a time when PCP anxiety was at an all time high.
