Graham Central Station – Release Yourself

After leaving Sly and The Family Stone, Larry Graham became a part of a group called Hot Chocolate and renamed it Graham Central Station. The group released two albums in 1974, the self-titled LP and Release Yourself. This album is funky and psychedelic, and Graham’s bass is featured prominently along with synthesizers, an early adopter in funk/soul music. The music is very positive and ambitious in its sound, and definitely recommended to casual funk fans. The album was recorded in Sausalito, CA and the cover photo was taken at a church in Tiburon, where Larry Graham appears to be levitating.
