Is Winelight a classic smooth jazz album? The perfect soundtrack to a romantic evening? Or the album with Just the Two of Us? That depends on you, your level of commitment and your opinion of “contemporary” jazz. There’s a lot here for many listeners, which makes it one for any collector. Grover Washington Jr. co-produced this album with Ralph MacDonald at MacDonald’s Rosebud studio, and it features Marcus Miller on bass, Steve Gadd on drums, Richard Tee on piano and MacDonald on percussion. Really, your evaluation of this record will reflect where you are in your life. Those in their advanced years will remember it as a huge hit. The youngest and most casual listeners will know it for its Grammy-winning Just the Two of Us. Others will know it as the winner of the Best Jazz Fusion Performance Grammy, and for those listeners it is already too late.
