Herb Alpert – Rise

1980 Herb Alpert album that features one side of original songs, and one side of covers. It was recorded after the success of the the title track, which held No. 1 on the Billboard charts for weeks, and was created by Alpert’s nephew Randy ‘Badazz’ Alpert and Andy Armer. A lot of the songs play with a dance beat and feature Alpert’s signature Latin-inflected trumpet along with some guitars, synths and basses.

The songs range from the great funk of Rise, one song (1980) commissioned for the tv broadcast of the Summer Olympics in Moscow, a cover of a Crusaders’ song (Street Life) and an electronic groove (Rotation). Its a very eclectic album that manages to feature Alpert’s trademark brass sounds in some interesting ways.

I was looking for this, and found it for either $1 or $2, a feat considering it is famous for being used heavily in Notorious B.I.G.’s Hypnotize.
