Released in 1971, the Shaft OST was the first double album recorded by an R&B artist. Isaac Hayes and the Bar-Kays created a funky soul masterpiece with this album, and the vocal tracks Theme from Shaft and Do Your Thing also feature some of the best instrumentals of the time. But all of the album is great, though the group occasionally has difficulty filling the duration of a double album, like when the NBC theme is played at the end of the 19 minute long Do Your Thing.
If you can find this at a used price, buy it, because it often sells at high prices to overeager collectors. Unfortunately for me, like some of my Isaac Hayes records, the vinyl is in not great condition. But I got it for $1, I wasn’t going to spend $20 on the Shaft soundtrack. It’s so good, though.
