John Klemmer – Touch

I bought this record online along with another couple contemporary jazz albums, and I was a little surprised. Touch was released in 1975 with John Klemmer playing tenor saxophone and making significant contributions to what would become smooth jazz. The album sounds really good, with great production and heavy effects on the sax. An Echoplex is used so much Klemmer even takes credit for it on the songs. Dave Grusin plays a Rhodes and some of Tom Scott’s LA Express and session musicians fill out the rest. Waterwheels swaps out most of them for George Duke, Chuck Rainey and Harvey Mason, and its definitely a highlight. I saw this album a lot at Amoeba in the $1 bins, but never bought it since there were so many and the cover is terrible. But I got bored and decided to get it online for the same price from a Discogs seller. Classic jazz albums like this are available everywhere and worth it if you are collecting jazz albums, but that’s it.
