Classic jazz-fusion album from 1973, and the last to feature the original lineup of Jan Hammer, Billy Cobham, Jerry Goodman on violin and Rick Laird on bass. This still represents one end of the fusion spectrum, with double-necked guitars, Minimoogs and Miles Davis covers, and is an essential listen to understand what John McLaughlin and this bands were up to in the 70’s. Birds of Fire was enormously successful for a jazz album, reaching 15 on the Billboard Pop charts, and still represents a Hendrix-inspired sound in jazz. Great dynamics in the music and an interesting listen, after listening to this album you will have an opinions about jazz-fusion if you don’t already. This one can be found for over $10 usually, but you can find it for less than that. Cool cover too.
