One of Neil Young’s very best albums, After the Gold Rush was the third solo album from Neil Young, and was recorded and released in 1970. Every song is fantastic, with only two exceeding four minutes, Southern Man and When You Dance I Can Really Love. The album demonstrates Neil Young’s songwriting talent and features his characteristic garage rock guitar along with guitarist Nils Lofgren on piano, a surprising choice not in spite of his inexperience playing the instrument but because that was the reason he was selected to play it. Its hard not to listen to this one and find something to love, even though much of the songs are have a grim tone or tragic and apocalyptic lyrics, but I don’t know what you are expecting from Neil Young. I don’t find these records secondhand very often, or at least not for reasonable prices, so I picked this up as soon as I could for $10. New listeners should hear this as soon as they can and should belong in any Neil Young fans collection.
