Pat Metheny – Watercolors

Although this is a solo album, the group was mostly made up of musicians who would become the Pat Metheny Group. Compared with a lot of other guitar-focused jazz/fusion of the time, this stands far apart for the mood and country influence. And man, it works. This is some of the moodiest, most atmospheric guitar music I have ever heard. Other songs are more conventional, and feature Pat Metheny’s expressive melodies but give room for the other members, mostly Lyle Mays on piano. Jaco Pastorius was replaced by Eberhard Weber for this album, and he doesn’t really make a big impact here. The group goes to a lot of different places on this album, and I really have to recommend it for that alone.
