Pointer Sisters – Break Out

The Pointer Sisters found their greatest success with the appropriately titled Break Out, their 10th album. This 1984 reissue includes I’m So Excited after it was re-released as a single in 1984 and then added to this album to shift more units. The album is catchy, with four Top 10 singles. Side 1 begins with Jump (For My Love), Automatic and I’m So Excited, three classics. The highlight for me is Automatic, with its funky guitar, bright synths and a deep vocal by Ruth Pointer. It was their highest-charting R&B song. The rest of the album is typical early 80’s R&B flavor, including Neutron Dance from the Beverly Hills Cop soundtrack. But you can only hear “I’m So Excited” so many times before you kind of tune it out, which is where most people are already. Bonus points since the Pointer Sisters were from Oakland, where I bought this album.
