Ramsey Lewis – Sun Goddess

Sun Goddess was released in 1974, with production on two songs by Maurice White, who had been the drummer for Ramsey Lewis’s band in the ’60s. White also co-wrote the title song, and Philip Bailey provided vocals while Charles Stepney, Verdine White and Don Myrick all contribute, making the title track and Hot Dawgit mostly Earth, Wind and Fire productions with Ramsey Lewis. The other songs were produced by Ted Macero and Ramsey Lewis, and feature Cleveland Eaton on bass and Maurice Jennings on percussion. It is mostly excellent, and the title track is amazing. Sun Goddess reached #1 on the Billboard Soul charts in 1975, beating out Grover Washington Jr.’s Mister Magic, and spent 21 weeks on the charts.
